I made the mistake of not doing that and couldn't find anywhere to stay for the night. Everything shut down. Ended up staying in some dude's spare room!

Re: Flying through Typhoon Mirinae (aka Santi)

Ah...

Well, seeing as they're used to typhoons etc. over there they'll probably delay the flight until it passes. However, in this case it's not so easy. I'd have to:

1. Take a trike to the dock and catch a boat to the mainland.
2. Get a two hour bus ride to the airport.
3. Speak to a rep that may not exist considering the airport has only one non-functioning conveyor belt for baggage claim. ;)

Re: Flying through Typhoon Mirinae (aka Santi)

I would drop by the airport and speak to a rep in person...

Re: Western Men, Indonesian Women.

When I am in Indonesia I am handsome. I bumped into your blog by doing a google search on photography and found your interesting article.

Your experience with the Indo lady in gym is no different than any expat/student/visitor living in the any countries in the world, it is just one of those things that could happen to anyone. E.g. An Asian expat living in the USA. Mostly likely everyone in the gym will ignored the Asian expat because he/she look the same with the rest of the minority in the States.

You got the attention from the locals because of the Asian hospitality and the urge of Asian culture wanted to please their guest in the country, in another work - the foreigners.

When comes to making friends it usually goes both way. So she has made the first move, it is your turn to introduce yourself. No biggy.

Re: 7 years of blogging: The Java Jive turns 7.

congratulation for 7 years...it seems like you are ready to go to the elementary school.

Keep blogging fella

Re: The majority of Twitter users are 35-to-44-years old and over 57% are from California. However, I currently work in stock footage licensing, and I have to say, in terms of income from stock media, rights-managed licensing seems to hold more financial opportunities. If you simply submit your photos to a stock photo house that does not negotiate license rates with advertisers and other big-budget clients, you may find that the money you receive for your images does not really equal the extent of their use. This is what has kept me from moving my photo library into stock photo services.

Due to the quality of your content, I think it would not be unreasonable for you to aim high - see how your work suits the libraries of the big commercially oriented stock photo houses (Corbis, Getty etc.) - you may be able to have larger royalties negotiated for you through these avenues.

I know of several highly successful wedding photographers in my region, which also happens to be a destination-wedding magnet, and I have worked a few weddings myself. Because of my relationship with photography, the stressful, expectation-laden wedding market is not for me in the long run. I have spoken with several photographers whose love of the craft used to find other outlets and subjects, but their businesses have become so reliant on the wedding-photo income, they no longer get to shoot what they love.

Personally, I am trying to ease into the income-from-photography pool, by selling "fine art" prints online and locally. I would like to find an avenue into more commercial work, but without a studio space, it's not yet feasible.

That's my two+ cents - I'll certainly be back to see what sort of information and advice you may gather here!
